Benjamin - Le Tombeau de Ravel
Adam Lee, clarinet
Kumi Matsuo, piano
Among the composer's last completed works is this set of Valses-caprices for clarinet or viola and piano composed in 1957 - one of Benjamin’s most delightful yet affecting works. It sends us back to the early violin works of the 1920s when the French influence was at its height in his music. Indeed, the title recalls Ravel’s own memorial work, Le tombeau de Couperin...

Decruck - Cantilène
Adam Lee, clarinet
Kumi Matsuo, piano
A recent reunion between husband and wife, and a known tendency to compose "in the evening when her young children were asleep and the house was quiet" produced this beautiful Cantilène, which I think paints an image of a relaxing Parisian evening, in the twilight hours, and the reunion of a happy couple.
I usually perform standing, but due to a knee injury sustained on the day of this performance, I had to play seated.

Capperauld - So my tears flow
Adam Lee, clarinet
Kumi Matsuo, piano
Written for the saxophonist, Lewis Banks. Originally written for Soprano Voice and Piano, So my tears flow is a reimagining of this lamenting song. Inspired by Ludwig Rellstab’s poem Aufenthalt, the title of this reimagined song-without-words refers to a particular line in Rellstab’s grief-stricken poem that reads: “As wave follows wave, so my tears flow, ever renewed.”
Recorded 31st May 2023, Royal College of Music. Produced by RCM Studios.

Burble was commissioned by, and written for the young clarinettist Fraser Langton. Two possible definitions of the word burble are a gurgling or bubbling sound and a rapid excited flow of speech both of which are portrayed in the music in various ways.
